A Red and White Christmas Table Setting

Christmas decorating is in full swing at our little cottage! This year I decided on red and white Christmas decor for our dining room, so I thought it fitting to create a red and white Christmas table setting to go along with it!

You are in for a treat today as I am also happy to be joining Rita from Panoply as she hosts myself and 13 other bloggers as we share our Christmas Tablescape ideas for 2024! You will find all the links at the end of this post, so grab a cozy beverage and settle in!

This is the first year we have had a Christmas tree in the dining room. It is a “skinny” tree that my daughter was no longer using, so she offered it to me. It is the perfect fit for our tiny room!

My idea for the red and white Christmas decor came on like a lightbulb when I was at Michael’s looking for some inexpensive ornaments to add to the tree, and I came across sweet little lollypops that were white with red swirls!

As my motto has been with my table decor this year, I wanted to keep it simple and uncluttered. And, I didn’t want to spend a lot either, and I knew I had plenty of things that would be perfect for my theme.

Last year I went with an English Cottage Christmas tablescape, and this year my table is still “cottagey” but a bit more whimsical!

What I used to create a red and white Christmas table

It started with this red and white buffalo check blanket that I repurposed as a tablecloth. These red round placemats I pulled from my collection.

I did splurge a little bit though! I couldn’t resist these adorable plates from Homesense! The scalloped edges and red bow detail were calling my name. When I spotted the napkins I thought they would be perfect given the embroidery matches the scalloped edge of the plates. We use cloth napkins all the time, so never hesitate buying napkins I love!

Did you see a glimpse of the cake centrepiece in the photo above?! Well, I had taken just a couple of photos of my table when I turned my attention away to answer the phone. My curious golden pup decided he would take the opportunity to have a closer look, and managed to take a big bite of the frosting right off the entire front of the cake! Needless to say I had to pivot real quick!

I had a moment of panic, then quickly moved to using my new red and white nutcracker on its’ own! To be fair, I didn’t purchase this for the table. I started to collect nut crackers a few years ago, and this handsome fellow is this years addition to the collection!

I have been baking up a storm in the kitchen, and come Christmas Eve when we host our brunch I will be adding a plate of these Cherry Bakewell tarts and Empire Cookies in keeping with our red and white theme!

In the photo below you get a better look at the cake topped with the nutcracker. The only consolation was that most of the cake was still edible!

In keeping with the red and white Christmas decor theme, I found these Christmas crackers that each have a packet of hot chocolate mix inside. The red boxes have snowmen on them, and the white ones have Santa’s.

My red press glass water glasses and everyday flatware complete the place settings.

My husband purchased this adorable snow globe music box for me years ago. It actually sits on my nightstand all year long. I paired it with a frosted glass Christmas tree and a shiny red bauble.

I decorated my sideboard with a few of our Santa and Mrs. Claus mugs, some bead garland and another winter snow globe.

Everything about my red and white Christmas table makes me happy! It’s bright, cheerful, and charming in a cottagey sort of way, which fits perfectly with our little red cottage!

  1. Maureen, your red and white color palette and whimsical accents create a charming holiday table–pinned! Wishing you a joyous Christmas season, Cecilia @ My Thrift Store Addiction

  2. Maureen, a red and white theme is ideal for Christmas. The blanket repurposed as a tablecloth is perfect and so smart to think outside the box. I don’t blame you for purchasing those sweet scalloped plates with the bow detail. They can be used for Valentines and many other occasions. You were able to salvage the cake with little effort by topping it with a nutcracker, genius idea. The Santa and Mrs. Claus snow globe is charming and has sweet memories, I am sure. Wishing you a Merry Christmas!
