Have you ever looked up into the night sky, and spotted a tall tree, bare of its’ leaves with the branches dotted with shadows of crows with the moonlight shining down behind them? It is a very spooky site to behold!

If you have visited my halloween tablescapes before, you know that I love a black theme! This Black Magic Halloween Tablescape is one of my favourites. There is something about seeing the black shadows of crows in the night sky that is so creepy, and that is what this year’s Halloween table is all about!

Although highly intelligent crows can evoke a sense of unease around Halloween. The fact that several crows together is called a murder of crows was not lost on me either! Their distinct long caws certainly sounds scary!

One of my dearest friends has a growing collection of crows, and shopping her house to see what I could use is what set this table in motion.

As scary as they can appear (and sound) sometimes, there are plenty of stories of crows leaving shiny gifts for those who feed them and gain their trust.

After borrowing from my friends collection of crows, the only things I had to purchase were small feathered crows to perch on the edge of the bowls and some black roses that I got on clearance at Michaels. Oh, and some candles that were a steal!

Finding Crow Halloween Table Decor

As I mentioned above, I borrowed a few crow figurines from my friend. But here are a few ideas of where to find all kinds of different crow themed decor pieces:

  • Garden Centres (rod iron and metal crow figurines)
  • Gift shops (resin and glass figurines, and prints)
  • Etsy (printable art and figurines)
  • Michael’s or other craft stores (feathered crows)
  • Florists
  • Party and Halloween shops
  • Dollar stores

Setting the Spooky Scene

You of course don’t have to do an all black table, but I think it adds to the eerie and spooky vibe of Halloween. Using different shades of black and different textures makes a more monochromatic tablescape interesting.

Adding a pop of a single colour is also an expected element on an all black or all white table. Dare I mention my all white Christmas table with a single pop of red!

The Table Cover

I was tempted to leave my table bare, since it is already grey, but decided to use my black tablecloth (or should I say big piece of black fabric) I bought a few years ago. It is the perfect foundation for a Halloween table.

The Centrepiece

For a change I decided not to do a floral centrepiece. Instead, for this Halloween centrepiece I started with some black cotton netting I had in my halloween “stash”. I bunched it up along the centre of the table to create a runner. By gathering it towards the centre, it created a nice textural element.

Next, I took black silk roses and poked them threw the netting to create a small bunch at either end. The netting hides the stems perfectly.

I arranged 3 different crows down the centre of the netting. One, holding a single black rose in its’ beak!

I couldn’t resist the shape of these black taper candles. Also a Michael’s find on clearance for 99 cents! I put them in thrift store silver candle holders that I brushed with black chalk paint to tone down the silver.

Halloween Place Setting

Remember that pop of colour I mentioned? Well, I decided to make my Maple Roasted Butternut Squash Soup and fill each bowl. And, it is so delicious. I make it on repeat in the colder months. I just love how the orange pops against the black stoneware bowls.

The stoneware plates and bowls are from Homesense. I bought them to use as our everyday dishes for a cozy change from our usual white plates.

A curious crow is perched on the edge of each bowl to keep a watchful eye! I think this is my favourite crow halloween decor idea! Imagine just the glow of candlelight and having a shadow-like feathered friend watching every spoonful!

Grey faux wood placemats anchor each place setting, again adding some texture. I almost forgot I had these, but glad I found as they work quite nicely.

My copper flatware pairs with the orange of the soup. I toyed with the idea of using my stainless flatware, but I decided on the copper as it compliments the soup in the bowls and adds some warmth.

The napkins were a bit tricky. Despite having about 20 sets of napkins, (I may have a slight addiction), I had no solid orange or black ones. I did have a white with grey botanical prints, so I wrapped them in black tulle and slid them inside silver napkin rings. Mixing metals is perfectly fine in my opinion!

The Extras for Halloween Decorating with Crows

I may have gotten carried away, but the “Olde Black Crow” checkered board is another piece from my friends collection. In fact, she made it herself! She is a very talented sign painter.

Pictures of crows hang on the wall alongside a crow themed checker board game.

I went to Etsy to find inexpensive prints to hang alongside the checkerboard. For just a couple of dollars each I thought these were fun, and plan to give them to my friend when I return all the crows I borrowed! I just put them in frames that always hang in my dining room with seasonal prints.

Some crow cling-on decals surround the pictures, while below I arranged a few pumpkins, some additional black roses, a rusty old crow and dessert plates. Keeping the pops of orange going, I plan to serve my must-try cream cheese frosted pumpkin bread for dessert!

And that brings us to the end of my table tour! I hope I have shown you how crow-themed Halloween decor can add a spooky and sophisticated touch to your tablescape. Whether you just use black feathers, faux crows like I did, or crow-inspired tableware, these can all create a hauntingly fun atmosphere for your Halloween gathering.

    1. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to your crow-inspired table setting. Crows are very intelligent birds and would be right at home amongst the silver candlesticks. A “murder” of crows definitely descended on your dining room and created a spooky table. Love the all black dishes and the touches of copper. The centerpiece was great as was the crow wall.
      Have a wonderful Halloween.

    9. Maureen, a very dramatic table you’ve created with all the black crow theme! I always enjoy your photo shots that show the table and back wall, that a very cool contrast in this case. The prints from Etsy, along with all the crows from your friend’s stash made for a great visual. And yes, I’ve witnessed that image of the crows in trees, both day and night. Living along the river, the crows (and turkey vultures) are numerous. The plate stack is quite handsome against the slightly feminine touch of the napkins wrapped in tulle. Those candles look like wooden spools! And let me just say that overhead shot with the squash soup is the epitome of a Fall/Halloween display. Very nicely done! Thanks so much for participating in the hop. Happy October!

    10. Maureen I love your all black table AND the touch of orange soup. The crows are great in conveying that spooky feeling. Makes me think of the movie “The Birds”….All your elements flow together nicely and I especially like the black tulle over the lighter colored napkins…going to copy that idea for sure. Have a great Halloween month…you definitely have something to “crow” about. LOL

    11. The pop of orange from your Butternut Squash Soup and copper flatware is visually stunning paired with all your black at your table Maureen! Love the crows (how fun & convenient to have a friend to borrow from), netting, textured placemats, black roses and your new dishes! Love the profile of the soup bowls and plates with the rims. Yes please to pumpkin bread with cream cheese frosting!! As always, it’s a treat to hop with you. Happy October and Halloween! ️

    12. Maureen, I love your eerie crow table. It strikes just the right note for a dark and mysterious night! Each element makes a striking contribution, from the “murder” of crows to the bold plates and bowls, to the texture of fabrics and black roses. All contrasted with the bold copper flatware and orange soup. (A wonderful idea to use the dinner itself as part of the table decor!) Have a perfectly frightful Halloween!

    13. Such a spooky table Maureen. Love the black with the orange soup and those crows. Reminds me of the movie, “The Birds.” How special to borrow from a friend.
